Invisalign Treatment – What is it?

Invisalign braces treatment is an orthodontic clear aligner system designed to facilitate the adjustment of teeth for optimal dental occlusion ( straighter teeth, better bite, better smile) this treatment involves the use of a series FDA approved plastic clear aligner.

The Invisalign system has been designed to be an alternative to conventional braces, allowing patients to achieve the smile that they’ve always wanted without unsightly metal brackets.

When worn, these plastic clear aligners are virtually invisible, on top of this, these aligners are easily detachable for daily activities, including drinking, brushing, eating, and special activities.

These aligners have no bands or metal wires that irritate the mouth, patients can wear them conveniently and comfortably. Each clear aligner is fully customised to the patient and they fit comfortably over teeth, the aligners gradually shift teeth into a pre-planned position over time with the change of each aligner.

There is a common misconception that Invisalign clear aligner treatment is only suitable for patients with mild orthodontic issues. The truth is that Invisalign treatment is able to correct a wide variety of malocclusion problems.

Invisalign has the ability to effectively address these common occlusal issues; Spacing, Open Bites, Cross Bites, Over-Jet, Under-Bite, Deep Bite and Crooked Teeth.

Gap Teeth

Spacing or gapped tooth is the orthodontic condition that occurs when patients develop extra spaces between their teeth. This spacing may affect speech when left untreated. On top of this, many patients find that these spaces come across as being unattractive.

Overbite

An excessive overbite is the orthodontic condition that occurs when a patients upper front teeth excessively extend over their lower set of front teeth.

Crowded Teeth

Crowded teeth is a common orthodontic condition that occurs when a patients jaw simply does not have enough space/room for teeth to fit normally. As such, the teeth may overlap one another, twist and even bunch up.

Open Bite

Patients who suffer from open bite, have upper and lower teeth that don’t touch when their mouth is closed. Having an open bite will affect appearance and may even cause speech problems.

Cross Bites

Cross bite is the orthodontic condition where patients have some of their upper teeth sit behind their lower teeth when the mouth is closed. – Rather than on the outside like they normally would. This condition may lead to abnormal wearing of teeth and even chipping.

Underbite

Underbite is orthodontic condition a patient suffers from when the lower set of teeth and jaw, excessively extended in front of the upper set of teeth. Severe underbites can cause difficulty in biting, chewing and even speech problems.

The Invisalign Journey

Examination & Initial Consultation:

The patient’s facial profile and teeth are first examined by an Invisalign certified dentist, who examines the suitability for conventional braces or Invisalign. After this examination has been completed, the dentist will perform an intra-oral scan of the patient, using the iTero Elements 2. From this scan, patients will be able to see a digitised 3D scan of their teeth. After, our dentist will also get 2 types of X-rays; Lateral Cephalometric Radiograph (Lat Ceph) & Panoramic Radiograph (OPG), through these Xrays, our dentists will be able to better understand the jaw and bone structure during treatment planning. Lastly, the dentist will then take a series of intra-oral & facial photos, for our record, tracking and treatment planning.

Treatment Planning

Based on the photos, xrays and intra-oral scans that were taken during your initial visit, our dentists will set out to plan and organise a specific Invisalign treatment plan for you using the Invisalign ClinCheck software.

Treatment Confirmation

After our dentist has completed the initial proposed Invisalign treatment plan, we’ll schedule you in for a follow up consultation to discuss the treatment plan. During this visit, you’ll better understand the exact details of treatment, such as the total duration of the treatment. During this visit, patients will be able to share any concerns or questions that they may have, before the production of clear aligners.

Aligner Fabrication

After precision mapping and design, your clear aligners will then manufactured at the Invisalign production facility in Mexico. After these aligners have been fabricated, they’ll then be shipped over to our clinics in Singapore.

Aligner Fitting and Attachments

On your next to the dentist, your dentist will place dental attachments on your teeth in accordance to the treatment plans, after which, we’ll issue a series of aligners with guidelines on how to properly wear, care and remove them. You will be given 2-3 sets of Invisalign aligners to wear till the next review about 6 weeks later. You will sequentially move up each pair of aligners till the next review with your dentist. Each pair of aligners is worn for about 2 weeks before progressing to the next pair. On top of this, we’ll get our patients started on Dental Monitoring, the A.I tracking system that allows for an enhanced Invisalign Treatment journey. Which will allow our dentists to track your Invisalign treatment in great detail by method of weekly photographs and an A.I detection system that will alert us in the event that any issues arise.

Duration of Treatment

You have to use the aligners night and day, patients should only remove them to brush, floss or eat. Teeth will start moving gradually over time, and your dentist will monitor the progress as often as possible through the use of Dental Monitoring. The entire journey, can take up to a year and up to 2 years for complex cases. At the end of treatment, you will require retainers to maintain your teeth in the corrected position.

Caring for Invisalign Aligners

Patients need to wear their aligners at least 22 hours daily. On top of this, aligners should only be removed for up to a maximum of 2 hours each day, to eat, drink, brush and floss.

Patients are required to brush their aligners using toothpaste and toothbrush followed by rinsing with cool water, once a day. To ensure that their aligners stay clean and hygienic.

Do not soak invisalign aligners in hot water as this will cause the clear plastic to deform. Patients are to always carry the Invisalign issued aligner container with them. Keep aligners in their containers when not in use to prevent losing, breaking them and from deforming.

Tips for Successful Treatment

Discipline and consistency. Since you can only use the aligners for only 22 hours every day, you need to be diligent with wearing the aligners to achieve best results. You have to remove the Invisalign aligner before any meal and you must clean your teeth very well before using the aligners again.

Maintain good oral hygiene and floss regularly. You need strict concentration and attention to good oral hygiene. You must thoroughly brush and floss when you eat anything. You also have to go for regular dental checks and also clean every six months. Even though many patients feel this is annoying, others experience unexpected result of enhanced teeth whitening and oral health.
